Forget Armstrong: Crystal Palace should target Celtic’s £5.4m-rated attacker to replace Benteke

The Crystal Palace fans in the Transfer Tavern are hoping their club will delve into the transfer market to source a replacement for Christian Benteke this summer.

Roy Hodgson placed plenty of faith and trust in Benteke throughout the previous campaign, but it’s almost impossible to argue that the Belgium international rewarded him during the course of the season. Benteke ended the season with an abject return of just 3 goals from 31 appearances in the Premier League, although he did contribute 6 assists in the same time.

However, the Eagles attacking threat was transformed at the end of the season with the mobile pairing of Wilfried Zaha and Andros Townsend leading the line, so Hodgson should take note of that improvement and target an attacker who possesses pace and agility in abundance.

According to a recent report from the Daily Record, Palace are lining up a bid for Celtic’s central midfield talent Stuart Armstrong this summer, but there is every reason to suggest they should instead divert their attention towards his highly-regarded teammate, namely Moussa Dembele (valued at £5.4 million by Transfermarkt).

The 21-year-old striker’s reputation has been on the rise during the past two seasons due to his electric displays for the Hoops in the SPFL at the spearhead of the attack. A hamstring injury limited his progress somewhat last season, but he still managed to make 23 appearances in the Scottish top-flight, scoring 8 and assisting 7 in the process.

Considering only 15 of those appearances were starts, it’s clear that Dembele is destined for a bright future in the game, and within the right environment he could undoubtedly blossom into a quality Premier League standard striker.

Surrounded by the likes of Zaha and Townsend, Dembele would be well-placed to harness the full extent of his ability and replicate his form in Scotland at a higher level of the game.

Palace have every reason to be interested in Armstrong, but solving the striker conundrum should be Hodgson’s immediate priority this summer, and bringing Dembele to South London to replace Benteke would represent an ideal solution to a glaring problem which has presented itself during the past twelve months.
