Over the last few days, Tottenham have been linked with a move for Everton midfielder Ross Barkley – leaving the fans in the Transfer Tavern feeling very disappointed indeed…
It has been a quiet summer for Tottenham so far, and whilst their squad is lined with talent, there is clearly a need for extra quality this summer – but Ross Barkley doesn’t exactly fit the bill.
He has had a poor year or so at Everton, and with his form showing no signs of improving, it is unlikely that he would get much of a chance at White Hart Lane next season.
Instead, if Tottenham are keen to land a top attacking midfielder, perhaps they should look at £25.5m-rated midfielder Riyad Mahrez this summer instead.
Football fans are notorious for having short memories, and that is certainly the case when considering Mahrez. During Leicester City’s historic Premier League winning campaign in the 2015/16 season, Mahrez was instrumental – and he was largely touted as the Premier League’s best player in that year.
Performing fantastically going forward, he regularly assisted and scored for the Foxes, eventually finishing the season with 11 assists and 17 league goals – a truly remarkable record.
Last season was, of course, a low point for the midfielder, but it was also a low point for Leicester City in general, and the blame cannot be placed upon his shoulders. On his day, there is simply nobody better – and at Tottenham, with the quality of the players that would surround him, he is likely to get even better.
At this point, Mahrez’s stock hasn’t been lower since his move to England, and Tottenham should take advantage. He is sure to return to form under Poch.
