Forget Butland: Klopp’s solution to Liverpool’s goalkeeping woes is staring him right in the face

It’s been an interesting few days for the Liverpool fans in the Transfer Tavern. Their side lost to Man Utd on Saturday, leading many to doubt their top-four credentials this term, and then news of a major potential transfer emerged on Sunday.

The Mirror revealed on Sunday that Stoke goalkeeper Jack Butland could be on his way to Anfield this summer in a £40 million deal, with Jurgen Klopp said to be a big fan.

It’s a move that, surprisingly, hasn’t gone down too well amongst our resident Reds, and that’s because of one man: Loris Karius.

The German has been nothing short of a revelation at Anfield this season, with Jurgen Klopp’s faith really being rewarded. He had a very tough start to life at Anfield, and in truth, two months ago his time at Liverpool genuinely looked over – but now, quite the opposite is true.

He’s emerged as one of the Premier League’s most impressive goalkeepers in recent weeks, providing a fantastic portfolio of impressive stops in just a matter of matches. He’s kept Liverpool in numerous games already this season, and at its core, that is the real task of a goalkeeper.

There are, of course, still concerns over his long-term future, given that he’s only really been performing well for a few weeks, but still – Klopp must not move too quickly. Karius has done everything that he possibly could have done so far, and that deserves a lot of credit.

It’s easy to forget, but he’s just 24-years-old. For a goalkeeper, in particular, that’s still far too young to be talking about a finished article. Indeed, he’s probably got another 2 years until he’s at that level – and given his recent form, that’s quite a scary thought for opposition attackers.

Now, he might not be the solution that Liverpool crave, but so far, he’s done all he can. It doesn’t make sense for Liverpool to splash £40 million on a new goalkeeper – when a perfectly good solution is staring Jurgen Klopp right in the face.
