Liverpool supporters have been pretty buoyant in the Transfer Tavern over the New Year period, what with their side well placed to achieve success on both the domestic and European stages under Jurgen Klopp in 2018.
The Merseyside giants are very much in contention for a top four place in the Premier League, and while the title may well be out of reach this season, their sensational 4-3 win over Manchester City in recent times is another clear indication of the potential of this Reds squad. Add in progression to the last 16 of the Champions League, where they face a very winnable tie against Porto next month, as well reaching the fourth round of the FA Cup, and there could be some very memorable moments to come in the next few months for our resident Liverpudlians.
As such, there is a growing sense of optimism among those Liverpool fans lining up at the bar in the Tavern, and they are likely to be further encouraged by recent reports linking them with a move for Real Madrid’s James Rodriguez.
The 26-year-old shot to prominence at the World Cup back in 2014 to earn his move to the Spanish capital, and although things started off reasonably well, a current loan spell at Bayern Munich says it all about his long-term prospects at the Bernabeu.
And Klopp’s Liverpool are one side reportedly keen on landing the Colombia star, who would not only be a perfect replacement for the recently sold Philippe Coutinho, but would also send out a message to other Premier League clubs that the Reds are ready to compete for the title.
Ultimately, the Merseyside outfit are going to come up some way short of likely champions Manchester City this season, but as they proved in their victory over the Citizens a few weeks back, they can certainly compete with the best in the country.
And adding a player of the calibre of Rodriguez can only serve to help them bridge that gap, as like Coutinho, he has that ability to win a match out of absolutely nothing, whether it’s from a dead-ball situation or in open play.
Arguably, Klopp’s side won’t miss Coutinho as much against the top sides – they always seem to play well against the best teams and several players raise their game – but it’ll be against those so-called ‘lesser’ sides (they have dropped ten points against sides outside the top six this term) where they will need someone to produce a moment of magic, like the Brazilian did wonderfully against Newcastle back in October.
And Rodriguez could be that man.
His vision is superb and he is capable of producing something out of nothing – Real Madrid wouldn’t have spent over £60 million on him if he wasn’t able to do that.
And in a team consisting of the likes of Mohamed Salah, Roberto Firmino, and Sadio Mane, the 26-year-old could run things from the middle of park, much like Coutinho did earlier this season, knowing that there would be a plethora of attacking talent to create for ahead of him.
More significantly though, landing a player of Rodriguez’s calibre, for a fee likely to be around what Real paid for him three-and-a-half years ago, would send out a huge statement of intent to the rest of the Premier League.
They have already made their intentions clear by landing Virgil van Dijk for £75 million, plugging an obvious thorn in their side at the back – adding Rodriguez to their team would only enhance their credentials even more.
And, although Coutinho’s magic has gone from Anfield, the Reds must quickly forget about the Brazilian and do all they can to bring the £45 million-rated Colombian (as per Transfermarkt) to Merseyside in the coming transfer windows.
