The Chelsea fans in the Transfer Tavern have been very impressed with Ethan Ampadu since his move to Chelsea. The Welshman has been a fairly regular member of the Chelsea first team, with various appearances and substitute roles already under his belt.
Despite his youth, he has looked comfortable and confident when playing against and alongside some of England’s best talents, and that’s a testament to his quality.
It’s no real surprise, then, that he has featured on Goal’s ‘NxGn’ list of 2018. The list details the 50 best young players in world football, and Ampadu’s rise has clearly not gone unnoticed. Describing the Welshman, the article describes him as the ‘new David Luiz’, which certainly goes a long way to highlight the sort of potential that he has.
However, whilst a comparison to Luiz is nothing to be ashamed of, our landlord is backing the Welshman to go one better. Indeed, he thinks that Ampadu could become the next John Terry at Chelsea.
After all, like Terry, Ampadu hasn’t joined Chelsea as a seasoned veteran. To the contrary, he joined at 16, and so much of his potential is yet to be realised. John Terry slowly made it through the ranks at Stamford Bridge to eventually get a chance in the team, and whenever he played, he looked good. Ampadu’s had a similar path thus far.
There are also similarities in their playstyles. Though Ampadu can play in a number of positions, he is most comfortable in the heart of the defence. Like Terry, he’s got a fantastic range of passing, whilst his reading of the game is also second-to-none. Luiz is renowned for defensive lapses, but Ampadu has nothing of the sort in his game. He is always looking comfortable and rarely makes mistakes.
Another clear comparison to be made between Ampadu and Terry is their leadership qualities. When Ampadu made his debut, he settled right in. Despite being just 17-years-old at the time, the Welshman was busy barking orders and commands to players that were, in some cases, more than 10 years older than him. It takes a special kind of player to have that personality. Terry had it – and Ampadu has it.
