Forget Deeney: This £7.2m rated striker solution is staring Rafa Benitez in the face

The Newcastle fans in the Transfer Tavern are hoping Benitez is able to bring fresh attacking talent to St James’ Park this month.

The Toon Army have been impressed with the level of success they have enjoyed in the Premier League so far this season despite the obvious limitations within the squad. However, the club could be set to face a relegation scrap at the bottom of the table in the coming months unless they can lure a handful of quality players to Tyneside by the end of January.

Newcastle have looked defensively sound with Jamal Lascelles commanding The Magpies back four in recent weeks, and his performances will certainly be a pivotal factor in their fight for survival.

The main issue for Newcastle has been at the opposite end of the pitch, with the likes of Joselu and Dwight Gayle struggling to score goals on a regular basis.

With that being said, it is no surprise that Benitez is reportedly in the market for a striker this month, as ESPN have claimed the Spaniard is hoping to bring Watford’s Troy Deeney to the North-East to provide further support up-front.

However, Benitez should abandon his pursuit for The Hornets fan-favourite as his record this season hardly suggests he will provide Newcastle with a much-needed boost.

Deeney has scored just 2 goals from 14 Premier League appearances during the current campaign, although it must be noted that only 7 of those appearances were from the outset.

Benitez would be wise to prioritise his limited resources elsewhere and hand Newcastle outcast Aleksandar Mitrovic (valued at £7.2 million by Transfermarkt) a shock recall to the first-team.

Naturally, Benitez will have his reasons for leaving Mitrovic out of his first-team plans, but he should reconsider his selection process considering that his preferred options are failing to impress.

Benitez will need to take a risk or two if Newcastle are to remain in the top-flight this season, so he should begin by giving the Serbian international a chance to live up to his potential on Tyneside.
