The West Ham United fans in the Transfer Tavern are concerned by rumours linking their side with a move for Manchester United’s Marouane Fellaini.
West Ham may not have secured their survival in the Premier League just yet, but that has not prevented them from looking forward to the summer transfer window and identifying a rather ambitious looking target in the shape of Marouane Fellaini. According to reports in The Daily Mirror, West Ham face competition from Leicester City, PSG, Juventus, Monaco and Beskitas for the signature of the Belgian international who is set to depart Old Trafford when his contract expires at the end of June.
Although Fellaini could offer the Hammers a unique dynamic in midfield, his lack of mobility should deter their interest in the former Evertonian. Also, considering Fellaini is 30-years-of-age, West Ham’s interest represents a lack of forward-thinking which will be needed to improve the club in the long-term future.
With that being said, David Moyes and the West Ham hierarchy should instead divert their attention towards a player who would provide genuine quality at both ends of the pitch, namely Joe Allen (valued at £16.2 million by Transfermarkt) of Stoke City. Now that the Potters look destined to drop into the Championship this season, Allen should be available at a discounted price in the summer and, if that proves to be the case, West Ham should take full advantage of his availability.
Allen – affectionately dubbed as the Welsh Xavi by supporters – has been one of Stoke’s standout performers this season. His tenacity and his range of passing are two of the most defining features of his style of play, and his quality in this regard would certainly be a huge asset to the Hammers.
West Ham need to strengthen their midfield options in the summer to ensure they can ease the burden which has been placed on the likes of Mark Noble and Cheikhou Kouyate this season due to a lack of strength in centre-midfield, but the signing of Fellaini is far from a wise solution to that problem.
However, acquiring the services of Joe Allen would undoubtedly represent a shrewd piece of business for the club, so Moyes should do everything he can to convince the Welsh international to move to The London Stadium during the summer window.
