There’s no doubting that Roberto Firmino is one of the most popular players at Anfield, but that doesn’t mean that he can’t be improved upon.
The Brazilian was a crucial part of Jurgen Klopp’s team last season, but with the Reds looking to improve this summer, bringing in someone to rival him makes perfect sense.
There are only a few players that could come in and immediately challenge Firmino for a starting berth, but our landlord thinks that it’s fair to say that Andrea Belotti would be one of them.
The Italian forward, who is 24-years-old, has enjoyed a staggering rise in recent years. He’s now emerged as a crucial player for current team Torino, and he looks ready to make another step up.
He differs from Firmino in that he’s purely a goalscorer. He was one of Europe’s best during the 2016/17 season after he bagged a stunning 26 league goals. He hasn’t been able to up those high standards over the last year, but his talent is clear for all to see.
In front of goal, there aren’t many better. When he gets a chance, you can often rely on him to put it in the back of the net, and that’s arguably what Firmino lacks – the efficiency to put away most chances.
Jurgen Klopp has had a remarkable impact on Firmino, in that he’s turned him from a good attacker with a decent goalscoring record into a very good attacker with a great goalscoring record. In Belotti, Liverpool would have a brilliantly natural goalscorer – and so a year or two under Klopp could turn him into an even better striker. That’s a prospect that should worry rival fans.
Whilst Firmino is clearly integral to Klopp’s team, another addition wouldn’t hurt, and perhaps it would benefit this team. If nothing else, offering the Brazilian another attacker to play alongside and link up with would never be a bad thing. On his own, though, Belotti would definitely have an impact.
