The Man City fans in the Transfer Tavern think that the heart of the midfield is the only area that still needs improving within their squad. Their defence is filled with quality, whilst their attack is undoubtedly one of the deadliest in Europe. The midfield, though, is markedly less dominant – with Fernandinho shouldering much of the responsibility thus far.
Unsurprisingly, then, the Manchester Evening News reported earlier this week that Pep Guardiola is hoping to upgrade the position this summer, with Brazilian midfielder Fred apparently his first choice option.
Certainly, Fred is a top player, but our landlord has identified another player that the Spaniard should be looking at: Monaco midfielder Fabinho, who is rated at £36 million by Transfer Markt.
A central midfielder by trade, Fabinho was one of the stars of a Monaco team that included the likes of Kylian Mbappe and Man City’s own Benjamin Mendy last season – winning the Ligue 1 title along the way. Though many of his teammates departed this term, he has continued to turn out for the French side – and his form has continued to improve.
A fantastic tackler, he provides incredible defensive quality – and that’s exactly what Man City are looking for. In many ways, he ticks all the boxes – he is great on the ball, he’s mobile and agile, he’s got solid pace, and he is a solid passer of the ball. His arrival would undoubtedly take the pressure off of Fernandinho, and that’s what they need right now, especially with so many games taking place every single year.
Monaco play a similar system to Man City, and so he wouldn’t need much of an adjustment period, and Fabinho’s experience both in France and in Europe would be invaluable as he looks to make the transition.
At 24-years-old, Fabinho is a fantastic option for the present and the future. If Man City sign him this summer, Guardiola’s wish for an improved midfield would certainly have been granted.
