Southampton haven't made the greatest start to this season. The Saints have only managed one win from eight games and are sat near the bottom of the Premier League table.

One man that has come under a lot of scrutiny in the opening fixtures of the season is Dutch international Wesley Hoedt. The defender particularly came under fire following the club's 3-0 loss to Liverpool, where he was deemed unfit to play in the Premier League.

However, there are some stats that actually prove the player's worth at the club, whilst also painting a popular player amongst fans in another light. Hoedt has made the most clearances, tackles and won the second most aerial duels at the club this season. This may be fairly obvious stats for a centre-back, but he has also completed the second most passes for the entire club. This goes to show that there is more to the player's game than what meets the eye.

On the other hand, there are some fairly damning stats for Cédric Soares. Of the four most frequently featured defenders under Mark Hughes this season- alongside Hoedt, Jannik Vestergaard and Ryan Bertrand-, Soares has made the fewest tackles and passes, with even striker Danny Ings making more tackles. Furthermore, he has made the most errors leading to goals, and received the most yellow cards. Over the course of a season, these stats could be telling and cost The Saints.

Now people can read into these stats as much as they want, after all, there is a well known idiom about lies and statistics, but it does show that all the criticism on one player may not be justified.
