The Manchester City fans in the Transfer Tavern are intrigued by rumours which link their club with a move for Andres Iniesta this summer.
Andres Iniesta is undoubtedly one of the finest central midfielders to ever grace the European game and recent reports suggest he could be set to embark on his first challenge in English football at the age of 33. According to AS, Manchester City are in the running for Iniesta’s signature alongside Paris Saint-Germain, despite reports of late which have heavily linked the World Cup winner with a move to China.
The lure of astronomical wage offers in the East will certainly be difficult for Iniesta to refuse this summer, but the two aforementioned European giants have plenty of cash to bring to the table as well. A final challenge on the European stage may well be one that Iniesta will fancy before taking his final step before retirement in China, but despite this, Pep Guardiola should avoid feelings of sentiment and nostalgia and end his interest in the Barcelona legend.
Guardiola’s approach to the transfer market in the summer of 2017 was characterised by a forward-thinking vision which prioritised the long-term quality of his team above all else. Signing Iniesta would represent a break from that trend following a season where Guardiola’s transfer strategy clearly paid dividends in the Premier League, so City should instead look to the future by signing Napoli’s deep-lying playmaker Jorginho (valued at £36 million by Transfermarkt) instead of Iniesta.
Jorginho has been heavily linked with Manchester City in recent weeks, and the latest report from The Daily Mail claims that the Citizens are the favourites to secure his signature this summer. The Italian international is just 26-years-old and has plenty of his best years ahead of him, so there’s no doubt his signature should be prioritised over Iniesta’s this summer.
Jorginho has played an instrumental role in Napoli’s bid for the Serie A title this season, as he has provided a creative base for the midfield to thrive off throughout the campaign. His excellent range of passing combined with his composure on the ball and intelligent reading of the game have turned him into one of the best deep-lying midfielders on the continent right now, so there’s no doubt Napoli will be demanding a huge fee for his services during the transfer window.
Signing Iniesta is a wonderfully romantic idea, but at some point the old generation have to pave way for the new and, as such, City should do everything they can to land Jorginho instead this summer.
