The Man City fans in the Transfer Tavern are very excited by a recent report from Goal. According to Goal, Man City are keen to add a new defender to their ranks in January. Two names are listed in the report, with both Virgil van Dijk and Inigo Martinez said to be attracting the interest of Pep Guardiola.
Though both talented in their own right, for our landlord, there should only be on name on Guardiola’s list, and that is Virgil van Dijk’s.
Rated at £27 million by Transfer Markt, van Dijk has been one of the Premier League’s best defenders for a number of years now. Currently the captain of Southampton, the consistency, quality and leadership that he has shown at the back for the club has made him a fan favourite amongst our resident Saints. Fantastic in the air, great with the ball at his feet and solid in the tackle, van Dijk is everything that you want from a defender.
He’d also be a fantastic fit at Man City. His aforementioned quality on the ball will be crucial for Pep Guardiola, given that he likes to play out from the back, and alongside someone like John Stones, the Dutchman would be a fantastic outlet for the Citizens. Beyond that, his pace and energy would certainly allow him to keep pace with his teammates, whilst at just 26-years-old, he’s now entering the prime of his career.
Inigo Martinez is a talented player, but what separates the two players more than most is Virgil van Dijk’s Premier League experience. He’s been a regular in the English top flight for a few years now, and that means that there would be no adjustment period for the Dutchman. Man City are on fire right now, and they need someone that can perform at that level as they look to secure a Premier League and European double.
Van Dijk is a no-risk option for the Citizens, and his signing would make much more sense.
