Liverpool’s season hit a new low with a dreadful Champions League performance away to FC Basel which saw Brendan Rodgers’ side fall to a 1-0 defeat in Switzerland.
Whilst plenty has been made of the loss of Luis Suarez, the injury to Daniel Sturridge and the time it is taking Mario Balotelli to settle into any sort of rhythm, the same problem as last season persists.
And that is Liverpool’s inability to defend and keep any sort of clean sheet – just one in their opening nine matches – with set pieces proving especially testing.
Liverpool have already conceded four goals from set pieces this season and lost the decisive goal last night from yet more poor defending from a corner.
Despite Brendan Rodgers having spent a combined total of £45 million on new centre backs over the past 13 months – with Tiago llori (£8 million), Mamadou Sakho (£18 million) and Dejan Lovren (£20 million) – Liverpool continue to look awful defensively.
With three months until the January transfer window, Rodgers will be forced to work with what he has.
But once that transfer window opens, if things have not improved dramatically then we can expect him to head back into the transfer market once more.
With Liverpool being linked with a host of attacking names, the likes of Karim Benzema, Gonzalo Higuain and Isco – first and foremost the defence needs sorting!
