Forget Kane: Tottenham simply cannot afford to lose one key figure this summer

The Tottenham Hotspur supporters have been drowning their sorrows in the Transfer Tavern this week after their side were dumped out of the FA Cup at the semi-final stage for the second consecutive season.

Tottenham Hotspur have been knocking on the door for silverware throughout Pochettino’s reign with the club, but a trophy continues to elude the Argentine after almost 4 years in charge. It appeared that the Lilywhites were all set to move into the final of the FA Cup when Dele Alli put Tottenham into a deserved lead after just 21 minutes at Wembley, but United responded in emphatic fashion and moved into the final courtesy of strikes from Alexis Sanchez and Ander Herrera.

The mood at Tottenham was clearly one of immense dejection in the aftermath of proceedings as they failed to deliver the goods on the big stage once again. Pochettino was particularly upset following his side’s defeat and he made no effort to mask his disappointment during his post-match interviews, as he declared that it may take “another manager” to lead the club to silverware in the future.

Much has been made of Harry Kane’s importance to the club in recent years, and there’s no doubt that Tottenham’s talisman is key to the club’s chances of achieving silverware in the future, but without Pochettino Spurs will struggle to emulate the relative success they have enjoyed under his leadership so far.

The club may not have lifted a trophy just yet, and that fact is a telling one for the supporters who are firmly aware that success is almost exclusively judged on the number of trophies won. However, Pochettino has installed consistency into a club which has struggled to hold its own at the highest reaches of English football for quite some time, and for that he deserves great credit.

The Tottenham hierarchy may have to be patient in their wait for Pochettino’s first trophy, but in the long-term their patience is bound to be rewarded with not just one, but multiple trophies under the Argentine’s leadership, so it’s imperative that the club can convince him to stay in the summer.
