Forget Kante: This Chelsea player is seriously under-appreciated at the club

When you consider the unsung heroes in the Chelsea squad, most fans in the Transfer Tavern would likely direct their attention to N’Golo Kante. He doesn’t score many goals, and rarely does she get the headlines despite his role in the squad.

However, the Frenchman has been so good over the last two years that most now recognise his talents, and so it’s tough to say that he is under-appreciated. Indeed, he’s regularly touted as one of Europe’s best midfielders.

Perhaps, then, that role has shifted onto another player, and our landlord thinks that Marcos Alonso is perhaps the most notable example.

Alonso isn’t a very popular man amongst Chelsea fans, and it’s really tough to see why. The left-back has arguably turned into the perfect wing-back, offering an ideal balance of defence and offence.

At the back, he’s solid and consistent, and rarely are attackers able to dance pasts him. Going forward meanwhile, his threat from set pieces is unrivalled amongst his peers in the Premier League, whilst his aerial presence also makes him a threat from corners.

Last season he picked up 7 goals and 2 assists, and that’s a very good record for a player in his position.

Alonso really deserves more credit, as he’s crucial to the way Chelsea play. He offers width and strength from the flanks like nobody else can, and without him, the Blues would be in a very different position.

It’s time for him to get the respect he deserves.
