The Chelsea fans in the Transfer Tavern are hoping for a midfield rebuild ahead of next season. For all of their quality up and down the field, their midfield is lacking somewhat.
Certainly, N’Golo Kante has been a star since moving to Stamford Bridge, but he hasn’t had the game-changing effect that he had during his first season this term, and so next season – the emphasis is likely to fall on someone else as the Blues look to go to the next level.
That person could very well end up being Ruben Loftus-Cheek.
Loftus-Cheek has yet to really earn his stripes at Stamford Bridge, but after impressing so much on-loan at Crystal Palace, next season could be the making of him at Stamford Bridge. The game-changing nature of what he brings to the pitch is exactly what the Blues have lacked this term.
Providing brilliant energy, fantastic technique and an eye for a goal, he would provide Chelsea’s midfield with a new lease on life. Whilst Tiemoue Bakayoko continues to struggle in the middle of the park, and with Cesc Fabregas lacking the energy to dominate play like he has previously, Loftus-Cheek could be the perfect player to really bridge the gap. He’s become the main man in the midfield for Palace this season, and so he’s clearly ready to make a step up and back to Chelsea.
Not to mention, at just 22-years-old, he’s still got his best years ahead of him – and he could be the man in the middle for the Blues for the best part of a decade.
Of course, he won’t want to return to Chelsea if he isn’t going to play regularly, and so Antonio Conte – or whoever is in charge – must give him the opportunity to impress. If they do, the rewards could be absolutely huge.
