Newcastle fans in the Transfer Tavern are optimistic for next season under Rafael Benitez with European football firmly in their sights.
The Magpies ended the Premier League season in 10th despite a lack of investment in the playing squad from owner Mike Ashley. He is yet to find a buyer for the club since listing in for sale in October 2017. Despite wanting out, Ashley has promised to back Benitez in the summer transfer window.
With the right signings, Newcastle can be European contenders. The Spaniard is believed to be interested in making the loan signing of Chelsea’s Kenedy a permanent one when the window reopens, but Chelsea may be unwilling to allow the Brazilian to leave.
If they are unable to sign Kenedy, Newcastle should instead aim for Ajax winger – David Neres. Valued at £13.5m by Transfermarkt, the 21-year-old is one of Europe’s hottest prospects. He joined from Sao Paulo in January 2017 and has scored 15 goals and notched 14 assists in all competitions this season. Neres is deadly when cutting in from the right onto his left foot, capable of picking out a pass into the box or beating his man.
He has averaged more take-ons (3.57) per 90 minutes than any other Ajax player this season – he would be a nightmare for Premier League defenders. His unpredictability is his biggest asset; defenders don’t know what he will do well.
If the Magpies are serious about their European ambitions, Neres would be the man to fire them up the table.
