The Manchester United fans in the Transfer Tavern are looking forward to the summer transfer window and beginning to discuss a handful of players who could potentially arrive at the club.
Jose Mourinho’s side look to have secured 2nd place in the Premier League and they will have the opportunity to claim a piece of silverware when they face Chelsea in the FA Cup final this month, but despite this, the supporters are hoping to see a huge improvement next season. The Red Devils faithful are well accustomed to success and have become some of the most demanding supporters in world football as a consequence.
The United supporters propping up our bar will be desperately hoping their side can bridge the gulf in class between themselves and their local-rivals next season, and according to reports from The Daily Mirror, they have identified a player who could aid their cause. The player in question is Justin Kluivert – son of the Dutch legend Patrick – who is currently playing his trade for Ajax in the Eredivisie.
The Dutch youngster is only 18-years-old and he is widely considered to be one of the hottest prospects on the continent. However, Kluivert predominantly operates on the left-wing, so it seems nonsensical for Mourinho to target him considering he has Anthony Marital, Marcus Rashford and Alexis Sanchez at his disposal already.
With that to consider, United should instead divert their attention towards a right-sided player who is beginning to make a name for himself in Serie A, namely Simone Verdi of Bologna. Verdi has been the club’s standout player so far this season with 8 goals and 10 assists to his name from 31 Serie A appearances, and the quality of his form almost earned him a transfer to Napoli in January.
Verdi (valued at £18 million by Transfermarkt) eventually opted against a transfer due to concerns over first-team opportunities with the title-chasing club, but those concerns would certainly not apply at United. Mourinho is lacking the presence of a natural right-winger, so the signing of Verdi would represent a perfect resolution to that particular problem.
The Italian international is a free-kick specialist, creative in the final-third, an excellent finisher and both-footed, and his quality in this regard would make him a great asset to the club. At 25-years-old he is something of a late bloomer, but United must take note of his progress this season, abandon their pursuit of Kluivert, and do everything they can to secure his services in the summer window.
