Our Chelsea fans here in the Transfer Tavern are hoping to see some young, English players through the door in the this window. Indeed, after reigning in the spending of late, that seems to be the way things are going.
Chelsea could possibly move for Jamaal Lascelles in the summer in a tug of war with London rivals Spurs for the Newcastle captain. With their current captain Gary Cahill hitting the mid-thirties soon and having possibly one of his worst seasons at Chelsea so far, a younger model may be needed to replace the stalwart of a defender.
In the bar, many of the regulars believe Lascelles would be a great signing for the Blues, after his performances in the Premier League for the Magpies so far, although some feel that there are better and younger defenders within their youth academy setup to promote to the first team. Undoubtedly, Lascelles is a great defender, but there are better options out there within the academy.
The Chelsea board are clearly looking at bringing in more youth players into the side, with the recent acquisitions of Ross Barkley and promotion of Andreas Christensen over the course of last season. With that in mind, our landlord takes a look at TWO possible other defenders to promote instead…
OUR VERDICT – Ethan Ampadu & Trevoh Chalobah
The Chelsea defender has been pulling up trees left, right and centre last season and will be surely sought after in this summer window for a loan move. However, with Chelsea’s defence needing a little TLC – the decision to opt for Ampadu over others could be a beneficial one for Conte as he looks to strengthen the back line in the summer.
Ampadu is no doubt a talent and one that could thrive up in the Premier league given the chance.
However, the younger and potentially better brother of Watford’s Nathaniel, Chalobah has a lot of qualities to make it at the top level. He can play as either a centre-back or a centre midfielder, indeed, it seems that defence is where he feels at home with probably his best performances.
Furthermore, with the possible departure of Luiz, now could be a good a time as any to spotlight himself.
Standing at 6’2 he is tall, good on the ball and very quick, all useful traits of course. Chalobah looks like a very good prospect for the future and could be a useful asset for Conte in the pre-season.
