The Arsenal fans in the Transfer Tavern are intrigued by recent reports which link their club with a summer bid for Norwich City’s James Maddison.
Arsenal already boast a strong array of attacking-midfielder’s within their ranks, but they are eager to bolster their options in that position according to The Daily Telegraph. The report claims that Arsenal are interested in signing James Maddison this summer in a deal which could be worth £25 million, although they face competition from the likes of Manchester City, Everton, Southampton, Brighton and Tottenham Hotspur.
The healthy competition is hardly surprising considering Maddison’s record in the Championship so far this season: 14 goals and 8 assists from 41 appearances rather speaks for itself. Considering Maddison is just 21-years-old, he’s only likely to improve with further exposure and he could eventually blossom into a fine top-flight player.
However, Arsenal should urge on the side of caution with this deal, as plenty of players down the years who have excelled in the Championship have developed into distinctly average Premier League players. With that to consider, Arsene Wenger and the Gunners hierarchy should instead divert their attention towards an attacking-midfielder who has a decent level of experience in the top-flight, namely Manuel Lanzini of West Ham.
Lanzini (valued at £16.2 million by Transfermarkt) has endured a stop-start season with West Ham due to a series of injuries which have had an adverse effect on his performances. His return this season is rather modest with just 3 goals and 8 assists to his name from 24 appearances, but that should not deter Arsenal from expressing an interest in the summer.
The Argentine has been one of the Hammers standout performers in the Premier League since he arrived from Al Jazira in 2016, as his ability to drift into space and influence the game both in and around the penalty area has proven to be a valuable weapon for the club. At 25-years-old there’s no doubt he still has some improving to do, but his performances in East London suggest he has the quality to step up to a top-four side next season.
Signing Maddison would represent a huge gamble for the club and, considering Arsenal’s current predicament in the Premier League, they are in no position to be taking risks in the summer transfer window, so they should abandon their pursuit of the Championship star and instead make a bid to sign Lanzini from West Ham this summer.
