The Manchester City fans in the Transfer Tavern are well-accustomed to rumours linking their club with a move for Riyad Mahrez and plenty of them are hoping a deal can be concluded during the upcoming transfer window.
Riyad Mahrez’s future has been in serious doubt since he submitted a transfer request to the Foxes on the final day of the January transfer window just a few months ago, and now that the season is over speculation is bound to intensify. According to reports from The Leicester Mercury, City have remained in contact with Leicester since the conclusion of the transfer window and are eager to conclude a deal for the Algerian this summer.
Although adding a player of Mahrez’s talent to City’s ranks would undoubtedly boos their chances of lifting the champions league next season, Guardiola might be tempted to instead consider making a bid for his Leicester teammate Demarai Gray if the Foxes continue to stubbornly refuse their advances towards the Algerian ace.
The 21-year-old winger has been used rather sporadically this season in the Premier League with 17 starts to his name, but the raw potential he has demonstrated suggests he could be set for an extremely bright future in English football.
The success Raheem Sterling has enjoyed whilst learning under Guardiola goes to prove how effective City’s manager can be whilst working alongside talented hot prospects on the training ground, so it’s quite plausible that Gray could represent another success story to emerge out of the club.
Whether Gray will be enticed by a move to the Etihad or not is another story, as he will understandably harbour concerns regarding first-team opportunities however, with blistering pace, quick-feet and determination to bring to the table, he should have no problem working his way into the starting eleven – especially considering City will be hoping to compete in four competitions next season.
It may be the case that Guardiola is looking for the finished article rather than a talent to nurture for the future, but considering Gray’s potential and the fact he is only 21-years-old, City would be wise to at least entertain the possibility of signing him instead of Mahrez this summer.
