Forget Man Utd: Man City should move for £36m-rated international this summer

The Manchester City fans in the Transfer Tavern are running out of superlatives to describe their team this season, but that has not deterred them from looking forward to the summer transfer window in recent weeks.

Pep Guardiola’s side have ran away with the Premier League title this season, and as such they are facing the prospect of humiliating Manchester United by either forcing them into a guard of honour, or by clinching the title with a victory over them during the Manchester derby next month. After years of subordination to their neighbours from across the city, the aforementioned prospects are about as desirable as they come for Europe’s up and coming heavyweight contender.

It’s not only on the field of play where the two sides have gone head-to-head in recent years, but also in the transfer market where the two sides are developing something of a controversial history. Most recently, United stole Alexis Sanchez from under City’s noses, but based on Sanchez’s performances in Manchester so far it appears that City made a lucky escape.

The two clubs share similar ambitions, so it’s only natural that they have shared the same transfer targets in the past, and although there has been no official interest from City as of yet, they would be wise to challenge United in their bid to sign another of Arsenal’s players this summer, namely Aaron Ramsey (valued at £36 million by Transfermarkt).

According to The Daily Star, Mourinho is an admirer of the Welsh international’s abilities and he is eager to bring him to Old Trafford this summer.

Although City’s squad is stacked with talent of the highest quality, they are slightly short of an extra midfield option who naturally plays in a box-to-box role, so Ramsey could be the man to fill that void. The 27-year-old enters the final year of his contract this summer, so he should be available at a reduced rate. Considering the level of his ability, City would be foolish not to take full advantage of his contract situation.

At 32-year-old, it’s likely that Fernandinho will need some extra support in midfield next season, and Ilkay Gundogan’s questionable record with injuries further suggests City’s need to bolster their options. With proven Premier League quality, technical brilliance and a willingness to be versatile in his role, Ramsey represents the perfect candidate to add a missing dimension to City’s midfield next season.

Not to mention, the chance to beat Man Utd to a signing would be an added bonus.
