Forget Martial: 33% of polled Tottenham fans want Pochettino to land 18-goal ace instead

The Tottenham fans in the Transfer Tavern are eager for their side to land Anthony Martial this summer. The Lilywhites have been linked with the Frenchman all summer long, with the Daily Mail noting at the start of June that a move was being prepared by the club.

However, we recently made the case that a move for Napoli attacker Dries Mertens would be a better choice. He’s more financially affordable than Martial, whilst his record in the last few seasons has been just as good, if not better, than Martial’s.

We put it to a vote, and whilst 67% of supporters would prefer to see Martial in North London, 33% of fans did vote in support of Mertens.

Though, clearly, a majority are still in favour of Martial, the fact that 1/3rd of Tottenham fans are on the side of Mertens is still significant.

After all, he’s not the sort of player that they’d normally target, given that he’s in his 30s, whilst he’s also unproven in the Premier League.

However, he did score 18 league goals last season, and so perhaps that has peaked their interest. Furthermore, perhaps a strong World Cup showing could tilt the scale even more.

Tottenham are yet to be linked with him since the transfer window opened, but it seems that some fans, at the very least, want Spurs to consider Mertens.
