The Manchester United fans in the Transfer Tavern are becoming increasingly concerned by rumours linking Anthony Martial with a move away from the club this summer.
Anthony Martial is certainly one of the brightest young talents in European football right now, so it’s only natural that our resident Red Devils are not best pleased by recent reports which link him with a transfer away from Old Trafford. According to Tuttosport (via the Manchester Evening News) Jose Mourinho is willing to listen to offers for his services when the transfer window opens, and the likes of Juventus, Barcelona and Bayern Munich are all queuing up to sign him.
Martial has shown plenty of signs that his career is about to take off since joining from Monaco in 2015, but so far his flashes of brilliance have been sporadic rather than consistent. Competition for first-team opportunities from the likes of Alexis Sanchez and Marcus Rashford have certainly deterred his progress somewhat, but Mourinho should persist with the French international this summer and instead sell Juan Mata (valued at £27 million by Transfermarkt) if he needs to offload one of his attacking players.
It’s no secret that Mata and Mourinho have rarely seen eye to eye, but the Spanish technician has managed to remain part of his manager’s first-team plans despite Mourinho’s decision to offload him when the pair were together at Chelsea. However, Mata is set to turn 30-years-old this weekend, so the summer window may represent an ideal opportunity for Mourinho to usher him out of the exit door for the second time in his career.
Mata is undoubtedly a quality player with plenty to offer the club, but if Mourinho needs to sell one of his players in order to convince Martial to remain at the club then he should be the man to make way. Following a season where City have dominated so convincingly, United cannot afford to allow their best players to leave this summer, such as Martial.
United have a huge summer ahead of them and their decisions in the transfer market will undoubtedly shape their success next season. Selling Martial would be a backwards step in their development, so Mourinho must reluctantly allow Mata to depart the club this summer if he is forced to sell one of his attacking midfielders during the summer window.
