Forget Martina: Ambitious move for South American would finally sort Everton out in problem area

The Everton fans in the Transfer Tavern were very worried about how their defence was exposed last weekend as they crashed to a 4-0 defeat against Tottenham Hotspur at Wembley. The Toffees shipped four goals as Spurs’ attackers – Son, Harry Kane, Dele Alli and Christian Eriksen – ran riot.

And one defender who once again came under criticism for an under fire performance was Cuco Martina. Although he may be playing out of position at left back, the former Southampton man has not covered himself in glory as he looks vulnerable in defence.

As a matter of urgency, Everton need an upgrade in that department. They need to bring in a new, young left back who can become a long term replacement for Leighton Baines, who is approaching the back end of his career.

Roma defender Emerson Palmieri would be a great addition. The 23-year-old is still very young and is showing signs of great potential – something which could be harnessed in the Premier League. Palmieri is an attack minded left back, who loves to get forward and offer something to the attack as well as providing defensive stability.

The former Brazil under-17 international could be interested in a move away from Roma. The Serie A side signed Aleksandr Kolarov in the summer and he has been preferred in the left back role while Palmieri missed a chunk of the season with an injury.

But he is back out on the pitch and he will be determined to prove himself again. A move to Everton could work for all parties and at a reported price of £20m, this could prove to be a shrewd investment from the Toffees.
