Forget Martins: Liverpool should sign this £27m rated winger to secure Champions League qualification

The Liverpool fans in the Transfer Tavern are hoping that FSG will provide Jurgen Klopp with the funds acquired from the sale of Coutinho to invest in new players.

Following the sale of Coutinho, speculation regarding potential incoming transfers at Anfield has become a consistent theme in the British media. However, it seems unclear as to whether Klopp has a substantial transfer kitty left to play with considering Liverpool have already confirmed the £75 million signing of Virgil Van Dijk.

Regardless of how much Klopp has to spend, he would be wise to walk away from a potential deal for Gelson Martins and pursue other targets if reports in The Daily Mirror which claim Sporting Lisbon are demanding €100 million for his signature prove to be true.

The highly-regarded 22-year-old has been in very impressive form for the Portuguese giants so far this season with 9 goals and 9 assists to his name from 30 fixtures in all-competitions.

His record is certainly one to be admired, but Liverpool should be able to land a player of the highest quality for a fee well below the €100 million mark in the current market.

One player who Klopp should be strongly considering is Leicester City’s Algerian ace Riyad Mahrez, who has been in terrific form for The Foxes once again this season.

Unlike Martins, Mahrez has bags of experience in the English top-flight and a proven track record to match, and those factors alone should encourage Klopp to pursue the £27m-rated Algerian (via Transfermarkt).

With only 18 months remaining on his current contract, Liverpool would be wise to make their move sooner rather than later before one of their top-four rivals or another European giant make Mahrez an offer he simply cannot refuse.
