The Liverpool fans are still fuming after their side’s collapse on Tuesday. Despite leading the game 3-0 at the break, the Reds finished the fixture with just one point – after a collapse in the second-half allowed their opponents, Sevilla, to get back into the game. Every player in red has been blamed over the course of the last couple of days, but at least according to our landlord, the man that must shoulder the brunt of the criticism is Alberto Moreno.
He was at fault for two of Sevilla’s three goals, with his poor form of last season rearing its ugly head once again. Indeed, for many of the fans in the Transfer Tavern, the Spaniard has run out of chances. Big changes are needed in the Liverpool defence in January, and the position that fans want to be sorted first is the left-back spot.
It’s a notoriously difficult position to fill, but our landlord thinks that he has the perfect solution – Ryan Bertrand. Formerly of Chelsea, Bertrand has excelled since moving to Southampton, arguably becoming one of the Premier League’s most consistent defenders. Far more defensive than Moreno, he very rarely makes a mistake, instead offering consistent, solid and competent defending on the left-hand side of the defence.
As a proven Premier League player, he has years of experience behind him – both domestically and in Europe – that will no doubt make him the perfect fit at Anfield. A number of Southampton players have moved north to Merseyside in recent years, and almost unanimously they have impressed. That bodes well for the prospect of this deal.
Rated at £18 million by Transfer Markt, Bertrand’s signing is likely to command a big sum, but given Liverpool’s struggles, they have little choice. Bertrand is the perfect target.
