Forget outrageous Isco deal: West Ham should sign £16.2m-rated attacker instead this summer

The West Ham United fans in the Transfer Tavern are hoping their club can complete a handful of ambitious transfers during the summer window, and recent reports suggest they are in the mood for doing exactly that when the season reaches its conclusion.

David Moyes’ side have not quite secured their place in the Premier League just yet despite their positive run of form in recent weeks. The Hammers currently sit 6 points clear of the relegation zone with 4 fixtures left to play, so they should be able to secure their place in the top-flight with just 1 victory from their remaining fixtures.

However, recent reports from Spanish media outlet Don Balon imply that the club’s hierarchy are already planning ahead for another season in the Premier League, despite the fact their safety is not mathematically secure. The report claims that West Ham have had a 90 million euro bid accepted for Real Madrid’s Isco, but a potential deal looks unlikely due to the player’s natural desire to move to a higher calibre club.

With all due respect to West Ham, moving to the London Stadium would represent a huge step down in the career of a player who deserves to be playing in the Champions League. Even if the details of the report are true, it seems beyond the realms of possibility that Isco could even be tempted to consider the possibility of moving to West Ham and, with that in mind, the club must focus on more viable alternatives this summer.

One player who should be available at a significantly more appealing price and have the personal desire to make a switch to the Hammers next season is Stoke City’s Xherdan Shaqiri (valued at £16.2 million by Transfermarkt). The Swiss international is an attacking-midfielder of genuine talent, but much to the dismay of the Potters faithful he has been unable to drag his side out of relegation trouble this season.

Paul Lambert’s side look destined to drop into the Championship this season, and if that proves to be the case there’s no doubt Shaqiri will be embarking on a new challenge this summer. Considering West Ham have been overly reliant on Marko Arnautovic for attacking inspiration this season, it’s vital that the club land a player of Shaqiri’s talents to ease the burden on their top goal-scorer next season.

The signing of Isco is a pipe dream which is never likely to materialise, but landing Shaqiri is a dream which has genuine potential to become a reality this summer, so West Ham should do everything they can to bring him to the club following Stoke’s relegation.
