Forget Petr Cech! 5 centre backs to SAVE Arsenal’s season

Raphael Varane The Premier League is set to return this weekend and Arsenal will be at the centre of it all with a mouth-watering clash against Manchester United at the Emirates Stadium on Saturday evening.

The Gunners have endured a tough start to the 2014/15 season with their defeat at Swansea City prior to the international break leaving them 12 points behind leaders Chelsea in the race for the title.

Arsene Wenger finds himself under pressure once again, with his excuses surrounding an injury crisis and his failure to land key players in the summer starting to sound too much like a broken record for Gunners supporters.

His failure to land a top class holding midfielder and a new centre back in particular is looking the most costly, with the Gunners having thrown away more points from winning positions than any other Premier League club.

With Thomas Vermaelen now at Barcelona, just Per Mertesacker and Laurent Koscielny are on hand as the club’s senior central defenders – and both have struggled to find a level of consistency this season.

Arsene Wenger will have to re-enter the transfer market this winter to save the Gunners’ season but rather than a move for Chelsea’s Petr Cech, defenders should be at the forefront of his mind.

Here we have identified five possible signings to save the Gunners flagging season.
