Forget Pulisic: Liverpool should land £40.5m-rated Man City target instead this summer

The Liverpool fans in the Transfer Tavern have been celebrating this week after their side secured their place in the final of the Champions League following a 7-6 aggregate victory over Roma, and recent reports regarding a potential summer transfer have given them further reason to be optimistic about the future.

Liverpool’s fluid front-three of Salah, Mane and Firmino may not have been at their devastating best in the Stadio Olimpico on Wednesday night, but the Reds managed to get the job done and book their place in Kiev at the end of the month. The challenge for Jurgen Klopp between now and the end of the season will be to keep all of his crucial players fit and ready to face Real Madrid, as the depth of their squad is not as strong as they would ideally like it to be.

However, according to the German media outlet Bild, that could be set to change this summer. The report claims that Liverpool are set to make a €60 million bid for Christian Pulisic this summer – one of Europe’s most promising young players.

The 19-year-old American intentional has carried the expectation of a nation on his shoulders since breaking through into Borussia Dortmund’s first-team as a 17-year-old. With 9 goals from 20 international appearances already to his name, there’s no doubt Pulisic has the potential to become the greatest footballer ever to emerge from the US, however, he is not the only promising winger breaking through in the Bundesliga.

Liverpool’s interest in Pulisic is certainly well-placed, but there is a suggestion that Leon Bailey’s potential outweighs that of the American wonderkid. Bailey is currently playing his trade at Bayer Leverkusen where he has scored 12 goals and provided 6 assists so far this season, and the quality of his performances have caught the attention of Manchester City according to Goal.

The signing of Pulisic would undoubtedly be a huge statement of intent from the club and an indicator of the progress they are making, but with Mo Salah firmly cemented in Liverpool’s right-wing position, his first-team opportunities would be relatively limited. On the other hand, Bailey prefers to operate from the left-wing and can offer a different dynamic to Mane due to the fact he is naturally left-footed.

Both Pulisic and Bailey (valued at £40.5 million by Transfermarkt) would be fantastic additions to Liverpool’s frightening front-line, but Bailey’s signature should be prioritised whilst Salah remains at Anfield.
