Forget Pulisic: Tottenham would finally replace Gareth Bale by landing £40.5m-rated wonderkid

The Tottenham Hotspur fans in the Transfer Tavern are hoping their club will make at least one marque signing this summer to bolster their chances of mounting a title challenge next season, but recent reports suggest they stand little chance of luring one of Europe’s most promising young players to the club.

According to a recent report from Sky Sports, Christian Pulisic’s father has quashed rumours linking his son with a move to the Premier League in no uncertain terms and claimed he will remain at Borussia Dortmund this summer. With that in mind and considering Pulisic’s record last season was far from groundbreaking, Mauricio Pochettino should turn his attention to another wonderkid who is making a name for himself in the Bundesliga.

The player in question is Bayer Leverkusen’s Leon Bailey (valued at £40.5 million by transfermarkt) – a player who could provide Tottenham with the same level of spark which Gareth Bale provided during his career in North London. Our resident Lilywhites would love to see Bale return this summer, but the club could be priced out of a potential deal due to the extortionate cost of the new stadium which has ran massively over budget.

However, Bailey is 8 years younger than Bale and remarkably similar in his direct style of play, so he may actually represent a wiser purchase this summer based on the evidence of his performances for Leverkusen so far. The 20-year-old winger is comfortable playing on either wing due to his ability to either cut inside or go down the outside of his opposite number when dribbling with the ball at his feet.

With blistering pace, dazzling dribbling and a clinical end-product to bring to the table, there are certainly parallels to be drawn between Bailey and Riyad Mahrez, so there’s no doubt Tottenham’s new stadium would be set alight by one of the most devastating young wingers on the planet.

Pochettino will need to make a statement of intent ahead of Tottenham’s move into the new stadium in order to give his squad a huge boost in their collective bid to finally end his silverware hoodoo, and signing Bailey could represent the perfect way to lay the foundations for a new era of success.
