Newcastle United supporters in the Transfer Tavern have been using the last few days to look back at their team’s season as a whole, and what lays in store for the North East giants between now and the end of the campaign.
Rafa Benitez’s men returned to the Premier League after just a one-year absence following promotion from the Championship in May last year, and will be hoping to re-establish themselves as a top-flight club over the coming seasons. Yet their first obstacle is to make sure they remain in the top tier this season, and with just ten games to go, the Magpies are very much in a relegation dog-fight, but results in recent weeks suggest that they do have enough to avoid an immediate return to the Championship.
Thus, several Newcastle fans are upbeat about the remainder of the season, with many believing that staying up this term in particular holds the key for a very bright future at the North East giants.
In the meantime though, there has been much for our resident Magpies supporters to get their teeth into, not least recent reports continuing to link them with a move for Galatasaray winger Garry Rodrigues.
And while the 27-year-old could well be a great addition to the Newcastle squad, the Magpies should forget about a move for the Cape Verde international, and instead focus all their efforts on bringing Kenedy to the club on a permanent basis.
Ultimately, the former Brazil youth international has made an impressive start to life in the North East since moving on loan from Chelsea back in January, earning an assist in his first start for the club in their 1-1 draw with Burnley last month.
And it was clear throughout that match and indeed the two league games since that the 22-year-old adds something else to the Newcastle attacking ranks, be it a desire to get on the ball and take defenders on, as well as an ability to create something from very little in the final third.
Just a few weeks previous, Kenedy ran the show in helping Chelsea narrowly beat Norwich City in the third round of the FA Cup at Stamford Bridge, further underlining the calibre of player the Magpies have been able to lure to the club.
And he’s one they simply must try and land on a permanent deal this summer.
The winger is highly unlikely to break into Antonio Conte’s first team plans anytime soon, and as such another season on loan surely beckons next term for the 22-year-old, as is often the case for many Blues youngsters.
But if Kenedy continues to excite and indeed delight the Newcastle fans, at the same time helping them to stay up, the man himself may well be interested in a permanent move to the club. And the board should certainly be interested in doing that as well.
Yes, Rodrigues has been in great form for Galatasaray in the last few months and looks a supremely talented winger, but there will inevitably be question marks over whether he can replicate that form in the Premier League – no such questions apply to Kenedy.
The 22-year-old has injected pace and excitement into the Newcastle frontline since his arrival, and as such the Magpies hierarchy simply must forget about Rodrigues and instead seal a permanent deal for £6.3 million-rated Kenedy (as per Transfermarkt) this summer.
