Forget Rose: It’s time for Mourinho to turn to this 22-year-old to solve his left-back problems

The Man Utd fans in the Transfer Tavern are intrigued by reports linking the club with a move for Danny Rose…

Jose Mourinho is said to be looking at finding a new left-back, and he is said to have identified Danny Rose as a potential target. This is something that our landlord can’t understand, particularly when a talented 22-year-old defender is sitting on the bench already at Old Trafford.

That player is, of course, Luke Shaw, and our landlord just isn’t able to work out why he isn’t being utilised. Indeed, he thinks that signing Rose would be a waste, with Shaw a much better option.

Logically it makes sense, given that Shaw is already at the club. There would be no outlandish transfer fee included, and so that would make more money available to spend elsewhere at the club. Not to mention the fact that Man Utd have already spent bit to land Shaw, and so they can’t just give up on him and move on.

Of course, Shaw has struggled over the last few years, and that can’t be denied. However, it also can’t be denied that he hasn’t really had a chance under Jose Mourinho, and whilst he may have his reasons for not selecting him, the only way that he can really assess the defender is if he gets game time. That doesn’t mean putting him on the pitch for 10 minutes here and 20 minutes there. It means giving him a run of games to reach the form that everyone is well aware that he can produce.

He hasn’t had a proper run of games in a very long time, and so it makes no sense for Mourinho to waste so much money on a player that is surplus to requirements.

As a teenager, Shaw was one of the Premier League’s best defenders. Controlling the left-hand side for Southampton, he impressed with his pace, power and tenacity, and those traits can’t just be lost over a few years and after a few injuries. He’s still got everything it takes to succeed, and he is every bit as good as Danny Rose.
