Forget Salah: Liverpool’s £22.5m-rated star must discover spirit of 2005 against Real Madrid

Anticipation is building in the Transfer Tavern as the Liverpool supporters prepare to face their biggest fixture of the season tomorrow evening when they face Real Madrid in Kiev.

Jurgen Klopp takes his side to the Olympic Stadium in Ukraine for his second Champions League final as a football manager to face a side who are looking to record their third straight victory in the competition. Naturally, the German manager will need all of his players to find their best form against the current holders in order for Liverpool to clinch the famous trophy for the second time since the turn of the century, and one man he will be relying on is Mo Salah.

The electric Egyptian has stolen the lions share of the plaudits this season, and rightly so. When Liverpool have needed a moment of magic, Salah has almost always been the man to provide it, so the supporters will undoubtedly be expecting him to crown a truly phenomenal individual season with a fitting performance on the biggest stage of all.

However, finals are often nervy, gritty affairs which are won by the side who are able to hold their nerve under pressure and maintain a winning mentality throughout the game, and that spirit often comes from the captain. In Liverpool’s case, that man is Jordan Henderson (valued at £22.5 million by Transfermarkt), so he must lead by example and set the tone for a gutsy victory for the Reds.

In preparation for the fixture, Henderson would be wise to look back at Liverpool’s thrilling victory over AC Milan in 2005 in which Steven Gerrard inspired a dramatic fightback from 3 nil down to record one of the most incredible turnarounds in the history of the sport. The Reds faithful lining up our bar are certainly hoping they will not be forced to endure such a nerve-jangling affair once again, but as long as the trophy is secured they cannot have too many complaints about the method of victory.

Henderson has divided opinion throughout his Liverpool career, especially this season, but if he brings his a-game to the final tomorrow and leads his side to victory over Real Madrid, he will certainly be regarded as something of a legend by the supporters for decades to come.
