The Liverpool fans in the Transfer Tavern have been waxing lyrical about the form of Mohamed Salah as of late, and with good reason. The PFA Player of the Year has been sensational all year long, and his performances have often been the difference between a win and loss for the Reds.
However, against Roma this evening. the Egyptian might not be the man that can determine Liverpool’s fate. Instead, that pressure could fall on the shoulders of Anfield regular Virgil van Dijk.
Since moving to Liverpool from Southampton, van Dijk has been a pillar of strength in the defence. He’s been crucial in their turnaround from top 4 challengers to genuine European contenders, and that’s a testament to just how important he is to this team. This evening, that importance will surely be tested once again.
Roma have been a very potent outfit this season, and so any defensive mistakes will be capitalised on. They managed to put three past Chelsea earlier this year, and so they are not a team that can be underestimated. If Liverpool don’t control their rampaging forwards, they could be blown out of the water.
Van Dijk’s performance will be particularly important when you consider how Liverpool did in their last game. They conceded two goals against Premier League strugglers West Brom, and they can’t afford to let their defence fall apart like that again. Van Dijk needs to step up and make sure that doesn’t happen again.
A strong performance from him could prevent Roma from getting in any offence. However, a poor display could mean disaster for the Reds.
