There is a sense of fear amongst the Chelsea fans in the Transfer Tavern that they could miss out on a deal for Alex Sandro this summer…
The Blues have been linked with the Brazilian, but have thus far been unsuccessful. A new addition on the left-hand side is absolutely crucial, but with time running out, perhaps Antonio Conte should consider other options.
One player that could be perfect for the role is Ryan Bertrand, who of course famously made his name at Stamford Bridge and is rated at £17 million by Transfer Markt.
Chelsea recognised his talent early on, and his role in the Champions League final is legendary. But alas, the Blues could not offer him regular football so he chose to move on. Fast forward a few years, and that situation is very different.
Bertrand has emerged as one of Europe’s most consistent defenders, and whilst he lacks the offensive edge of Marcos Alonso, there is arguably nobody better at defending. Alonso was exploited on occasion last season, and Bertrand would be the perfect player to bring in against a very offensive side.
His homegrown status is also very important. On a basic level, he would likely love nothing more than to come back to the club at which he made his name, but his status is also very important for reaching Premier League guidelines. With the departures of Nathaniel Chalobah, John Terry and Ruben Loftus-Cheek, the Blues are very short in that regard this season – and Bertrand is key as a result.
Chelsea will need to suck up their pride, but there would arguably be nobody better.
