Manchester United fans in the Transfer Tavern are hoping for a big summer of spending after watching their side fall 19 behind Manchester City in the race for the title.
United received a lot of criticism for their performances this season but still managed a second place finish in the Premier League – a significant improvement on last season where they ended the season in fifth. This season marked Jose Mourinho’s first as United manager that not did finish with a trophy after losing to Chelsea in the final of the FA Cup.
To challenge with Manchester City again, United need a major revamp. With Alexis Sanchez and Romelu Lukaku in attack, they certainly have the firepower to compete for the title. However, their defence requires improvement, starting with a new left-back. With that in mind, Juventus star Alex Sandro has been strongly linked with a move to Old Trafford as a result.
However, Sandro could be tough to lure away from the Italian champions due to their lack of depth. Instead, United should make a move for Barcelona defender – Jordi Alba. Valued at £54m by Transfermarkt, Alba has developed into one of the world’s finest defenders since his move from Valencia in 2012. He made 33 appearances for the Blaugrana in La Liga last season and would go some way into finally replacing Patrice Evra at the Theatre of Dreams, with Luke Shaw failing to fully convince.
His current deal at the Nou Camp expires in 2020, and the 29-year-old has not been offered a new contract despite being promised one 18 months ago, according to Sport (via the Metro). United should take advantage of the growing tension by providing him an escape route to the Premier League. An expert in attack and defence, Alba would be one of United’s best signing in years.
