All summer long, Chelsea have been linked with a move for Alex Sandro, and the fans in the Transfer Tavern can’t work out why…
Sure, he is one of Europe’s best defenders, and he has been a star for Juventus over the last few years. But do they really need him? Well, judging by Marcos Alonso’s performance against Tottenham, the answer to that question is a resounding no.
The Spaniard, who is rated at £22.5 million by Transfer Markt, was Chelsea’s man of the match on Sunday, with two excellent goals proving vital to the Blues’ cause. A stunning free-kick in the first half proved the threat that he brings from set-pieces, whilst a deft finish in the closing stages helped show that his first goal was no fluke.
His performance went so far beyond his goals though. He was solid defensively, whilst he also served as a catalyst in the attack. Indeed, his general play was just fantastic, and it was the perfect response to links with a potential replacement.
Undoubtedly, Chelsea need depth on the left-hand side. They can’t survive all season with just Alonso. But in terms of a player to start every week, they would struggle to do better than the Spaniard.
They landed Alonso for a decent price last summer, especially considering his current valuation, and Chelsea should be commended for that. He might be worth less than some of Europe’s bigger names, but he is performing fantastically right now.
He is so good at both ends of the pitch, and at 26-years-old, he is in the prime of his life. Chelsea would be far wiser to spend smaller fees on a selection of players, as they’ve got the left-back spot nailed down for years to come with Alonso.
