Manchester United fans in the Transfer Tavern will be watching Champions League football at Old Trafford next season following their 2-1 victory over Arsenal at the weekend.
Jose Mourinho’s side are a shoe-in to finish second in the Premier League table despite some unconvincing displays at times this season. They might not be pleasant on the eye, but results are all that matter. Now, the Red Devils have a huge summer ahead of them if they are to catch rivals Manchester City in the race for the title next year.
First on Mourinho’s shopping list is a new left-back, it seems. Ashley Young has performed remarkably well this season but is nearing the end of his career and is not a natural defender. The Portuguese wants an upgrade and has reportedly targeted a move for Juventus’ Brazilian full-back, Alex Sandro.
However, instead of Sandro, United should make an audacious attempt to lure Bayern Munich full-back, David Alaba, away from Bavaria. The 25-year-old is arguably the best in the world and United would easily be able to afford the enormous transfer fee and his wage demands.
Valued at £45m by Transfermarkt, signing Alaba would be a massive statement of intent from the Red Devils as they bid to win their first league title since the retirement of Sir Alex Ferguson. Indeed, the Austrian international is also capable at centre-back and centre midfield – making him a useful option for Mourinho. One of the best in the world, he’d be a wonderful signing and a great addition to the Premier League.
Obviously, Bayern are unlikely to allow their star defender to leave unless United make them an offer they can’t refuse.
United fans, could United sign David Alaba? Let us know!
