Marcos Alonso’s performances over the past year and a half have really impressed the Chelsea fans in the Transfer Tavern. They think he is the perfect fit for Antonio Conte’s left wing-back role.
But for quite a while now, Chelsea have failed to find a backup option in that department or someone who can push Alonso for a starting place. The Chelsea fans in the Transfer Tavern are hoping that a top quality left wing back can be brought in to increase competition for places in the squad and allow rotation in a physically demanding role.
Alex Sandro is, apparently, the player that Chelsea want – but our landlord isn’t so sure. Instead, he thinks that Bayer Leverkusen defender Wendell would be a far better choice.
The Brazilian is younger and arguably better than Sandro defensively. A fantastic tackler with great concentration, the 24-year-old has emerged as one of Germany’s brightest young talents.
However, despite his defensive quality, Wendell is also able to push forward and provide goalscoring opportunities too. He’s picked up 3 league assists this term, which is same as Sandro. He has also, like Alonso, got a decent strike on him – and he is a real threat from set pieces.
Wendell has established himself as a regular at Bayer Leverkusen since his 2014 switch from Brazilian side Gremio and now he should be on the verge of a move to a European giant.
Chelsea need to ensure that they secure a deal for him. For the first couple of years, he would probably deputise for Alonso and play in games where Chelsea feel that rotation is necessary. But soon enough, if he continues to fulfil his potential, Wendell could be a regular in the Chelsea starting XI.
