Forget Sandro: This exciting top-flight wide-man would be the perfect January addition for Chelsea – agreed?

The Chelsea fans in the Transfer Tavern are desperate for a new left-back to join the club in January, and so a recent report from the Evening Standard suggesting that a move for Emerson Palmieri could be on the cards has generated a lot of excitement in the pub. Sure, he’s no Alex Sandro, but the Italian defender could be just what Antonio Conte is looking for.

Whilst not carrying the star power of Sandro, the Italian does have the potential to be every bit as good. Like Sandro, he’s an offensive full-back, providing fantastic energy and pace down the left-hand side. Very efficient with the ball at his feet, Emerson – as he is known – excels when looking to pass the ball forward or cross it across the face of the goal. That’s exactly what Chelsea are looking for in a defender, given that they often play with a formation requiring wing-backs, instead of the typically more defensive full-back.

Furthermore, at just 23-years-old, there is more than enough scope for the Italian defender to improve. He’s had injury problems lately, of course, but he’s young enough to recover and he’s talented enough to reach a very high level. With Antonio Conte at the helm, he’ll also have the opportunity to work with a manager that can certainly get the best out of him.

According to the Evening Standard, he could be available for just £20 million, which is a bargain in the modern market. Sure, he isn’t as good as Sandro – who is rated considerably higher – but at that price, he’s a very low-risk option. Furthermore, given the fine form of Marcos Alonso, whoever comes in will likely be a backup option. It doesn’t make sense to spend much more than £20 million on a player of that ilk, and so financially, this deal makes far more sense.

Clearly, then, Emerson would be a great choice – do you agree?
