Forget Sessegnon: Man Utd should target £13.5m-rated ace to rebuild struggling defence

The Man Utd fans in the Transfer Tavern are excited at reports from The Times linking their side with a move for Fulham sensation Ryan Sessegnon. He’s had a breakout year in the Championship, and a huge move could well be on the horizon this summer.

However, our landlord isn’t sure that the Englishman is what the Red Devils need. They need to rebuild their defence, that is full of average talent and has struggled this season. Our landlord thinks that a move for German defender Phillip Max, who is rated at £13.5 million by Transfer Markt, makes far more sense.

After all, Sessegnon – though still considered a defender – has impressed as an attacker this term. He’s been brilliant going forward, making use of his brilliant technical ability and pace to move past the opposition with ease. He’s also had a lot of luck in front of goal, having bagged a whopping 15 league goals this season.

In truth, he’s emerged as one of Europe’s best young attackers – but that isn’t what Man Utd need right now. What they need is more quality in defence, and whilst Sessegnon could play there, he’d be a square peg in a round hole.

Instead, then, Max could be perfect. Max is far more of a defender that Sessegnon, but he offers a lot going forward too. He’s picked up a remarkable 12 league assists this term, which is among the biggest numbers in Europe.

His passing is naturally brilliant, whilst he’s also a strong runner and dribbler.

Defensively, he’s also very solid. Fantastic positioning and tackling are just two traits that indicate his quality at the back, whilst you only have to look at his average rating, which Who Scored put at 7.15, to recognise just how good his overall game is.

Max is, in many ways, the perfect player – and he’d be brilliant at Man Utd. He’s far better suited than Sessegnon.
