The Toon Army in the Transfer Tavern are hoping to see the arrival of a new striker at St James’ Park this month to boos their survival hopes.
Rafa Benitez has made an acceptable start to life in the Premier League, but he will not rest easy until he know that his Newcastle side are safe from relegation this season. Newcastle currently sit just 1 point clear of the relegation zone in 15th place after 24 matches, and the punters clad in black and white propping up our bar are concerned that they will fall further down the table unless they are able to sign a new striker this month.
So far this season, Newcastle have managed to score just 22 league goals with the likes of Joselu and Dwight Gayle leading the line for the North-East giants, whilst Aleksandar Mitrovic has been forced to watch on from the sidlelines.
But according to reports in The Daily Mirror, Benitez could be set to break the clubs transfer record to bring further attacking talent to the club this month in the shape of Leicester City’s Islam Slimani. His hefty price tag is a natural consequence of the inflation within the current transfer market, but that does not suggest that he is the best value for money option available to Benitez.
In Newcastle’s current situation, they need a striker who possesses more pace and agility than what Slimani has to offer, and Southampton’s Manolo Gabbiadini could do just that for The Magpies.
Gabbiadini hit the ground running for Southampton after his January move from Napoli in 2017, but he has desperately struggled for both form, and a regular run of games in the side since Mauricio Pellegrino took charge on the south coast.
Considering Southampton look set to secure the signing of Carrillo from Monaco very shortly, Gabiadini could well be open to another mid-season move, so Benitez should reconsider his move for Slimani this month and do everything he can to land the Italian striker instead.
