Forget Sturridge: Newcastle dodged a bullet, now it’s time to move for £13.5m-rated African star

The Toon Army in the Transfer Tavern are feeling apprehensive ahead of two of the biggest days in the clubs season so far.

Newcastle United’s season will certainly not be determined by their transfer activity before the end of the January window, but their failure to land a new striker will certainly be a huge blow to everybody at the club. It has been no secret in the past week that Rafa Benitez is desperately hoping to bring a striker to St James’ Park before the deadline passes on Wednesday evening as Newcastle have been strongly linked with Feyenoord talent Nikolai Jorgensen.

However, Newcastle’s transfer history under Mike Ashley strongly suggests that they are unlikely to break their long standing transfer record to secure the services of the Denmark international. With that to consider, it is no surprise to hear that Newcastle are interested in signing Daniel Sturridge on loan this month according to the BBC.

The same report claims that Newcastle are facing competition from their fellow relegation-rivals West Brom for Sturridge. Although Sturridge has an excellent goalscoring record prior to his crippling problems with injury, Benitez should end his interest in the England international and instead bring Kelechi Iheanacho to the club if he wants to ensure his side remain in the top-flight this year.

For all of Sturridge’s qualities, his record with injury in recent years poses far too great a risk for a side who are crying out for a reliable goalscorer. At this stage in the season, risks are not worth taking when there are alternative options, such as Iheanacho who is hungry to prove himself in the Premier League.

Iheanacho (valued at £13.5 million by Transfermarkt) has struggled to break into the first-team at Leicester ahead of Jamie Vardy and Shinji Okazaki, so it’s likely that a 6 month loan deal would appeal to the highly promising Nigerian international. A loan move would suit all parties concerned at this stage in the season, so Benitez should make him the clubs top priority before the window slams shut.
