The Manchester United fans have been thoroughly impressed by the performances of Ashley Young so far this season, but recent reports suggest that he will not be the first-choice left-back for too much longer.
Jose Mourinho’s treatment of Luke Shaw this year has been a consistent headline maker, and the suggestion is that the 22-year-old will depart the club this summer due to his fractured relationship with the Portuguese boss. Mourinho has opted to play Ashley Young in his place for the vast majority of the season so far, despite the fact Young is naturally suited to a more advanced role.
However, recent reports from the Daily Mirror state that United are interested in signing a new left-back this summer, namely Layvin Kurzawa (valued at £19.8 million by Transfermarkt) who is currently playing his trade with Paris Saint-Germain. The report also claims that United will face competition for his signature from both Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur, so there’s no doubt it will be a tough ask to lure him to Old Trafford this summer.
But if Kurzawa analyses the situation properly he will realise that United is an ideal destination for his career at this moment in time due to the distinct lack of competition for a starting berth. At Chelsea, Marcos Alonso has firmly cemented his place as the club’s first-choice left-back, whilst Tottenham have both Ben Davies and Danny Rose to chose from.
United’s situation is dramatically different as Young is clearly not a long-term solution at left-back, whilst Shaw’s future appears destined to be played away from Old Trafford. Quite simply, the left-back spot is there for the taking, so Kurzawa would be foolish not to take full advantage of a rare opportunity to step into United’s first-team almost completely unchallenged.
The fact that United can certainly guarantee Kurzawa Champions League football next season should also count in Mourinho’s favour this summer, so if the French international chooses to leave the French giants there’s only one destination that he should be considering.
