For the Liverpool fans in the Transfer Tavern, nothing is more important than signing a new defender in January. Jurgen Klopp’s squad is full of depth and quality, but at the back, they’re severely lacking. They’ve enjoyed a breakout campaign from Joe Gomez, whilst Andy Robertson also looks very talented, but their problems in the middle of the defence are still evident.
Beyond the likes of Joel Matip, Ragnar Klavan and Dejan Lovren – none of whom have covered themselves in glory this season – Klopp has very little choice, and so a new signing in this regard is crucial. One player that has long been rumoured with a move to Anfield is Virgin van Dijk, and – indeed – the newspaper the Sun even suggests that there is ‘no doubt’ that their interest remains.
That being said, our landlord doesn’t think the Dutchman would be the best choice. Given his price and the Reds’ failure to land him last summer, a move for another target may be wiser, and one player that is attracting a few eyes in the pub is Aymeric Laporte.
Currently 23-years-old, Laporte plays for Athletic Bilbao in La Liga, and despite his relative youth he’s been a regular in the first team for a number of years. He has made 14 league appearances so far this term, whilst a further 33 showings came last season. He’s an established member of the first team, and he’s built that responsibility by showing his quality.
First and foremost, he’s a defender. Often leading with no-nonsense defending, he’s fantastic in the air and strong in the tackle. That said, he’s also comfortable on the ball, with passing and moving on the ball both also a regular feature within his game.
Rated at £22.5 million by Transfer Markt, he may be a slightly cheaper option compared to Virgil van Dijk, but he’d provide every bit as much quality. He’d be a very wise signing in January – agreed?
