The Newcastle fans in the Transfer Tavern are desperately hoping that Martin Dubravka will remain at the club this summer, but they may be forced to target a different goalkeeper if they hit a snag during negotiations.
The resident Magpies lining up our have been waxing lyrical about Dubravka ever since he arrived at St James’ Park from Sparta Prague in January, and they believe his impact at the club played a decisive role in their survival bid. After months of chopping and changing between Karl Darlow and Rob Elliot, Rafa Benitez’s goalkeeping conundrum was finally resolved by Dubravka’s arrival, so he will certainly be hoping to complete a permanent deal for his services this summer.
The report claims that the Chilean manager is eager for a reunion with both Yaya Toure and Caballero at the London Stadium this summer – a pair of players he worked with during his stint as manager of Manchester City.
However, the Magpies should keep a close eye on developments in the capital, as Caballero represents a perfect plan b option if they fail in their bid to sign Dubravka.
Cabellero has been guilty of making the occasional mistake during his time in English football, but overall he is a solid goalkeeper with plenty to offer the club.
The Argentine is a fantastic shot-stopper, a confident distributor of the ball and a penalty-saving specialist, so there’s no doubt he could solve a nagging club problem for Benitez if a potential deal for Dubravka falls through.
Naturally, the Newcastle supporters will be desperate to see Dubravka sign a permanent deal this summer, but they cannot have too many complaints if they are forced to settle for Caballero instead.
