Forget Willian: Chelsea should land this £25.2m-rated Steve McClaren flop to replace him

Chelsea fans in the Transfer Tavern finally have something to celebrate after watching the Blues lift the FA Cup at the weekend thanks to a 1-0 victory over Manchester United.

After a disappointing Premier League season where the Blues ended the season in fifth therefore missing out on Champions League football. Despite their FA Cup victory, Antonio Conte is still facing the sack, and many key players have been linked with an exit. Most notably, Willian has been rumoured with a move to rivals Manchester United.

Losing their Player of the Season would be a massive blow for the Blues, especially if he joins a Premier League rival. To replace him, they should look to former Newcastle United winger – Florian Thauvin. The French winger stayed in England for just six months before being loaned back to Marseille where he eventually completed a permanent transfer. Indeed, under former Toon boss Steve McClaren, he was no better than terrible.

Since re-joining the club last summer – he has enjoyed his finest season to date. Remarkably, Thauvin has netted 26 goals and grabbed 18 assists in the 54 appearances in all competitions resulting in his market value increasing to £25.2m according to Transfermarkt. His goalscoring exploits earned him a place in France’s 2018 World Cup squad.

The winger is still only 25-years-old and has plenty of time to continue his development. With silky dribbling and devastating long-shots, he is the ideal replacement for Willian. It’s a risky move after his struggles initially in the Premier League, but with a better squad around him, it could turn out to be an astute piece of business by the Blues.
