Jose Mourinho has long been a manager that has placed faith in older players. Rather than spending big on exciting but unproven youngsters, he has typically opted for proven quality first and foremost.
That was seen by the capture of Nemanja Matic over the summer, who has gone on to play a leading role for the Red Devils. Even the likes of Paul Pogba and Romelu Lukaku, both of whom are young in contrast to Matic, had several years of experience at the highest level behind them prior to their capture.
It wasn’t much of a surprise, then, to hear reports earlier this week from Sky Sports News indicating that the Red Devils are interested in a summer move for Chelsea midfielder Willian. At 29-years-old, their interest reinforces the aforementioned sentiment from Mourinho.
However, in the opinion of our landlord, perhaps it’s time that Mourinho changes his tact. After all, in 17-year-old Angel Gomes, the Red Devils could have the perfect long-term solution to their attacking problems.
Like Willian, Gomes is known for his exhilarating pace and dribbling. He’s been a standout talent in the Man Utd developmental system for several years now, and he’s been best known for his incredible playing going forward. That makes him quite the threat in that regard.
At 17-year-old, the Englishman is a player that has all of his best years ahead of him. But that doesn’t mean that he can’t make a difference for Man Utd now. They’ve seen the impact that a youngster can have in the form of Marcus Rashford, and in Gomes, Mourinho could be seeing double next season.
