A few Newcastle United supporters in the Football Transfer Tavern are looking nervously over their pints.
This is as John Cross from Mirror Football arrives in the tavern with news about possible foreign interest in one of their star players.
Cross claims that Serie A pace setters Roma have targeted Magpies midfielder Yohan Cabaye as the player they want to maintain their strong Serie A title push.
Roma manager Rudi Garcia, who managed the French star during his three years at Lille, is reportedly putting a £12 million offer to lure him to the Stadio Olimpico in January.
The 27-year-old had been subject of strong interest from Arsenal during the summer transfer window, but despite becoming unsettled he remained at St. James’ Park and has returned with some of his best football for the Magpies.
Alan Pardew will be desperate to keep hold of the classy midfield man after he managed to hold off the Gunners approach in the summer and as one punter quips,£12 million is unlikely to be enough to see him sold in the winter window.
But that is unlikely to stop the Italians, whose remarkable 10-match winning streak ended on Sunday as they drew 1-1 with Torino, as they try to fetch the former Lille man to Italy.
Cross then causes ripples in the tavern when he suggests that other transfer options could come from Tottenham as Franco Baldini assists his former side with possible moves for Sandro and Lewis Holtby in the pipeline if they fail to land Cabaye.
